Meeting 4: Woodard and Lee (2021)
Main ideas
Define what statistical computing actions are and how to look for them in student work.
Determine which statistical computing actions are used in phases of statistical problem solving.
“… statistical programming languages can add extraneous cognitive load to the problem solving process and it may be wise with novices to instead utilize a statistical technology meant for learning statistics.”
Questions
Should the availability of Gen AI tools change the way we view extraneous cognitive loads in statistical computing?
The optimal level of struggling with statistical material is likely not zero. Where can we find the sweet spot?
What sort of activities could we have students complete in order to build up their level of persistence and encourage them to solve problems on their own (rather than immediately asking for help)?
Questions
Would it be advantageous to have a computer programming course as a pre-requisite or co-requisite of an (intro) stats course?
What if we frame hypothesis testing as statistical problem solving? What would it look like?
Which of the problem solving phases are responsible for students not seeing the multi-level nature of hypothesis testing?
